This sophisticated, contemporary kitchen extends the feelings of serenity and tranquility from the outside landscape to the internal spaces. Colours and materials are mirrored between the two areas. Warm grey, soft taupe and coral tones naturally occurring in the rock formations that define the fish pond and waterfall are replicated in the kitchen elements. The natural swathing stone of the countertop augments the interplay even further with it's undulating pattern.

The first step in this magnificent transformation of a 1940's brick and wood kitchen was to heavily brace the external wall and insert a ten-foot solid pain of glass with an adjoining two-foot rotary window to bring in fresh air and act as a pass-through to the outside patio.

Now the kitchen plan could begin. The shape of the room was perfectly suited to address the simplicity of design and ease of function requested by the clients. The fridge and oven units were placed at the far end of the inside wall, partially hidden by the natural brick chimney surround. Here they are convenient without demanding any visual prominence. The result of this decision allowed a continuous run of pantries on the wall adjacent to the window. This block of cabinets acted as an architectural form, while creating adequate storage space for food stuffs, baking needs, small appliances and cooking equipment necessary for an active family of four. The small island was added for two purposes: home for the microwave (below the counter across from the sinks) and landing space for the fridge and double ovens. The decision to place it on a pedestal base, altered it's focus from that of a small island to a fascinating little furniture piece. The clients detailed the hardwood around the base of the pedestal to mimic the shape of the top portion.

A large desk to the left of the peninsula was constructed with extra deep wall units to house the stereo components that would control the wall and ceiling music system throughout the house. The design detail of a chrome reveal running continuously under the countertops creates interest and suggests that the granite is floating; contradicting the natural weight of the stone.

The final, dramatic touch was a five foot by five foot mirror custom framed in a simple, wide gold and silver surround. It was hung on the inside brick wall reflecting the activities beyond: flowers, greenery, family and friends lounging in the lazy days of the summer or hockey rink, children, moms, dads and dogs in a flurry of activity in the winter.

This is a kitchen that creates a place for wonderful memories to be born.
