"Classic" and "Inviting" describe
this superb Ottawa kitchen. It was planned from blueprints for a
new home built in a simple, elegant design with a sense of "Arts
and Crafts" styling.
The main priority of the client was a space that functioned well
for her family: a dynamic husband, three very active teen-aged children
and a charming little dog. Also, it had to be warm and inviting
for the many friends that would drop by and large family gatherings.
Finally, she wanted it to address the exterior styling of the house
and maintain the integrity of quality and lasting appeal. This would
truly be the heart of a very busy home.
The kitchen is set back in the house and has an illusion of separation
from the adjacent eating area and family room by using return walls
and a dropped ceiling. One planning concern was to keep the cook
from being visually separated from the adjoining room. This was
achieved by planning the main work areas to be located where he
or she could maintain a clear view of the space. Another concern
was to keep it from appearing shrouded. The cabinet choice addressed
this issue. The main area is a simple raised panel maple finished
in a cream, hand-brushed glaze. It brings light into the area while
still maintaining a feeling of warmth. The desk area, display case
and island back use the same door style but stained in a rich auburn
colour. Besides adding to the ambiance of the space, these elements
bring the additional interest of "furniture-look" pieces
to it.
Elements of detail were added in heavy crown moldings, angles at
the cook top and island to mirror a section of the exterior glazed
wall, fluting and furniture-look toe kick on the display piece and
fretwork on the book case, wine rack and decorative hood. The kitchen
is complete with rich hardwood floors, granite countertops and tumbled
marble backsplash resulting in a warm, welcoming and gracious space
that reflects the quality of the family living within it.
